A Plan for an English Lesson in Tennis

Lesson Plan: Tennis Vocabulary and Strategies in English

Target Audience: Sports students in higher education

Lesson Duration: 90 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  • Understand and use key tennis-related vocabulary and expressions in English.
  • Identify and explain basic rules, techniques, and strategies in tennis.
  • Practice listening comprehension through commentary and discussion on professional tennis matches.
  • Improve speaking skills by engaging in discussions and role-plays related to tennis.

Materials:

  • Tennis-related video clips (commentary from professional matches, tutorials, etc.).
  • Worksheet with vocabulary and comprehension questions.
  • Visual aids (court diagram, racquet, tennis ball).
  • Whiteboard/Markers.

Lesson Structure:

1. Warm-up (10 minutes):

  • Objective: Activate prior knowledge about tennis and introduce key vocabulary.
  • Activity: Begin the class with a quick discussion:
    • Questions: “What do you know about tennis?” “Have you played tennis before?”
    • Write down terms students mention on the board and introduce new vocabulary if needed (e.g., serve, volley, backhand, forehand, ace, break point).
  • Follow-up: Use a visual of a tennis court to review positions (baseline, service line, net) and different shots (slice, lob, drop shot).

2. Vocabulary Focus (15 minutes):

  • Objective: Teach key tennis vocabulary and expressions.
  • Activity: Introduce important tennis terms related to rules, techniques, and strategies (examples below). Students will receive a handout with a list of terms and their definitions, which they must match with examples.
    • Serve – The initial shot that starts a point.
    • Volley – A shot hit before the ball bounces.
    • Deuce – When the score is tied at 40-40.
    • Break point – When the receiver has a chance to win the game by breaking the server’s serve.

3. Listening Comprehension (20 minutes):

  • Objective: Improve listening comprehension through a dynamic tennis match clip with commentary.
  • Activity:
    • Play a short 2-3 minute clip of a professional tennis match with commentary in English.

    • Ask students to listen carefully to the commentary and focus on the terms and strategies used.

    • Worksheet: Distribute a worksheet with comprehension questions based on the clip. Example questions:

      1. What shot does the player use to win the point?
      2. Which strategy is mentioned during the rally?
      3. What was the final score in the game?
    • Follow-up: Discuss the answers and highlight new vocabulary or strategies mentioned in the commentary.

4. Rules and Strategies Discussion (15 minutes):

  • Objective: Understand and explain basic rules and key strategies in tennis.
  • Activity:
    • Briefly explain key rules (scoring system, tie-breaker, serving rules) and strategies (serve-and-volley, baseline play, etc.).
    • Split students into pairs or small groups and assign each group a different strategy (e.g., aggressive baseline play, serve-and-volley). Each group will discuss how their strategy works and present their findings to the class.

5. Role-play (20 minutes):

  • Objective: Practice speaking and applying vocabulary in real-life tennis scenarios.
  • Activity:
    • Organize a role-play activity where one student acts as a tennis coach and the other as a player.
    • The "coach" will give the "player" advice during a match, using the vocabulary and strategies discussed in class (e.g., “Use more backhand shots to target your opponent’s weaker side”).
    • After each role-play, provide feedback and open up a short discussion about the strategies used.

6. Wrap-up and Homework (10 minutes):

  • Objective: Consolidate learning and assign follow-up work.
  • Activity: Review the main points of the lesson by having students summarize what they learned about tennis vocabulary, rules, and strategies.
    • Assign homework: Write a short paragraph describing a tennis match (real or imagined) using at least five key terms from the vocabulary list.

Assessment:

  • Participation in class discussions and activities.
  • Worksheet answers.
  • Role-play performance and use of vocabulary.
  • Homework (tennis match description).

Key Vocabulary:

  • Serve
  • Volley
  • Ace
  • Break point
  • Forehand/Backhand
  • Deuce
  • Baseline
  • Tie-break
  • Lob
  • Drop shot

This lesson plan aims to engage students by combining theory, practice, and discussion to reinforce both language skills and understanding of tennis.
